They are named after an ancestor who was Naval Aviator #3 and created the air station there, the first to fly a navy aircraft in combat at Veracruz, where he was also the first naval aviator to take ground fire. He was the first to be catapulted off a carrier.
My point is the masses will almost always gravitate towards name recognition over qualifications and experience, and although not as often it happens in the military as well.
I'm not sure that point needed to be made with this audience. I'm still unclear why you posted a picture of Mustin. Were his experiences or qualifications lacking somehow? Are you asserting that he had a successful career because of his name? If so, is there any actual evidence of that?
You're right. And while I'm an idealist at heart and think politicians like AOC, James Talarico, and Mark Kelly, are the folks who don't come from family names and have the right idea, I understand that the aristocracy is still real and a family name will get someone a leg up. Coming from "Good Stock" is still something to be considered.
Given the statistics on officers making O-6 going on to make flag is around 2% and his father and grandfather also made flag, you tell me if that seems more likely that this was coincidental or if the family name added weight in selection?
