Also, attribution for the undersea comms cables severance has not yet been established per that news article.

Some interesting nuggets in this thread relative to ownership and crew of the vessel, and also inclination and ability of the involved countries to ‘pull over’ and detain the foreign vessel suspected.

So it looks like RUS launched an ICBM last night, as part of capability demonstration or show a force.

I can't imagine what happened within various duty locations/watch officer desks at STRATCOM.

The payload were inert MIRVs.

But still holy crap!

I'm sure there was some sort of communication to US on intention.

Thoughts?

It could be a provocation or a sign that Russia is running short on the various components required to build less expensive guided rockets at scale. The former would be an Indic that some trade restrictions are starting to have an effect. It could also be any number NPS I haven’t considered but I guess this is why they have the “red telephone” in a handy location.

What makes you think the RV’s were inert?

That’s quite the light show, unfortunately.

I think Russia is at the ‘if we’ve got it we might as well use it’ stage.

Russia did it to signal their unhappiness with the US allowing Ukraine to use US-supplied long range missiles for strikes deep inside Russia.

From the video online, the ICBM appears to have used conventional munition warheads, which were not inert but also not nuclear.

Russians (Gov of Russia) are thugs and bullies, not criminal masterminds. They didn't care that polonium, novichok, or little green men each left a trail of breadcrumbs right back to them. I don't think it really matters that much either way, but Zakharova's call getting picked up by the microphone wasn't "all part of the plan" in my opinion.

Bio is the new nuclear. I wonder if Ukraine isn't working on them.

One of the many pretenses for war that Russia claimed at the outset of its Ukraine invasion was that Ukraine-based biolabs were working on dual use bioweapon research using US funding. Who knows if it’s true but after the Wuhan institute of virology was proven to have received millions in NIH funding via EcoHealth Alliance for coronavirus research in bats - after repeated denials and lies from Fauci and others - it would not surprise me at all.

JFC...it is not true, at all, that the Ukrainians were working on bioweapons. Ukrainian labs were doing civilian research funded by the US, that has always been public and acknowledged by us and the Ukrainians long before the Russians decided to spread propaganda about them.

“Bioweapon” is a loaded term.

That NPR article says, quote: “Both the U.S. and Ukraine have also signed a treaty vowing never to produce or use biological weapons.”

That’s great… but we know for a fact that the US funded bat coronavirus research at the BSL-4 lab in Wuhan, which developed via bioengineering from exogenous spike proteins a highly contagious novel coronavirus with no vaccine. The pretense for this research was to develop vaccines for coronaviruses. Which they didn’t develop until after the coronavirus outbreak.

So whether or not you call the Wuhan-developed coronavirus a bioweapon or not, that manmade virus certainly did a huge amount of harm across the globe. That fact, plus the lies and coverups by Fauci and EcoHealth, and the millions in patent royalties Fauci made from Big Pharma while holding a government office, have permanently harmed the trust of people in bioresearch institutions.
