Yep keep PTing, stay focused and positive, and on the day of carb up in the morning and have some coffee a few hours before.

Between that and the adrenaline you're going to get from nerves/doing it for real you'd be surprised what you can push your body to do.

My first PRT I was shaking like crazy as I forced the last few pushups, but I made it.

One last bit of advice, every now and then do a practice PRT, i.e. ~58 situps, rest 2 mins, 47 pushups, rest 10 mins, and do your 1.5 mile run. You'd be surprised how much tougher it becomes when you do it with such short rest breaks in that specific order.

Went to MEPS, I have 20/20 vision, passed the depth perception, but I failed both the Ishihara Plates and the FALANT test (color blind tests)!:icon_rage

So that's gonna set me back a bit. Hopefully I'll be able to retake it somehow. I think I'd be able to pass the FALANT because they guy giving me the test was going pretty fast and the green and white lights were pretty dim (but maybe that's because im F'n color blind!).

So if that doesn't work out....so long NFO, hello SWO.

cp with your situation will you have to resubmit for swo will you get an automatic spot......also at meps all they tested me for was the normal vision test (letters), depth perception, and the color test with the numbers surrounded by dots, what is the falant test you are reffering to, is that something they give you if you fail the first colr test?

good luck man seems if its not one thing its another

They only gave me the FALANT because I failed Ishihara color plate test (the one you did). It's a box that shines three different colored light (red, green, white) but only two at a time are lit. You have to tell them which two colors are lit up. But the green was very dim and the white was pretty close to the green. Now that I think about it, I bet I could pass it if I get the chance to take it again. I've heard of aviators failing both tests and taking it over and passing (hopefully me).

But if it doesn't work out, I was pro rec'd for SWO at the same time I was pro rec'd NFO. So hopefully I'll be able to just take the SWO slot. I'm not 100% sure, can anyone shed light on this?

I want to hear the answer to this too. They say SWO boards aren't going to meet, and if I get pro-rec'd somewhere I'd much rather grab the pro-rec than wait around for SWO.

From the little research I've done, it looks like I need to pass the color vision test for SWO too. I guess it makes sense.

Hopefully they'll let me retake the test. But I KNOW I can tell the difference between red and green!:icon_rage (that's a red face).

what color is this one:D ? lol
I swear some of these tests you need to know how to take? At meps i was clueless during the depth perception test, I didn't know i could take as much time as i needed and I also didn't know to look beyond the circles. Luckily I passed but not before the lady told me I failed. then 5 min later she came back and told me I passed for navy but was 1 line short of passing AF standards.

Colorblindness will disqualify you from almost everything except some Restricted-Line Officer positions in the Navy, which makes sense because other positions require you to see things like buoys, beacons, flags, and semaphores which have colors that must be deciphered from a distance. So if you are colorblind, then SWO, NFO, SNA, pretty much all the main ones are out, and there are no waivers for that either.

cpwhit1, don't let this be a downer but some colorblind people can still tell the difference between red and green in most everyday situations, but when the color is very small physically, like a pinpoint of light or something in the distance, that is when colorblindness really affects you and one cannot tell the difference. Failing both the Ishihara and the FALANT does not bode well, but the FALANT is definitely the most passable of the two.

If you are colorblind, there are still a few roles that do not require color vision, I know it is the case for IW and Supply, so you still could find a place in the greatest Navy in the world if you really wanted to.

cpwhit did meps schedule an appt. for you? You might want to ask your OR if you can get a private exam? I hope everything works out I know at this point it would crush me after all of the work I put in.......TRY EVERYTHING

Sea_Wolf: Yeah, I don't know why I thought I could get into SWO without a color vision pass. It's been a day...that much is for certain. If I can't retake the eye exam, and if what you say about Supply is true, then I'm definitely going to try for a Supply slot. It would have been in my top 3 had I not wanted SNA or SNFO. I'm not giving up just yet.

Hotwings: I'm gonna see if I can retake it. I've heard "re-do's" have been done before. I'm not going to pass the Ishihara (I found some on the internet and I just can't see the damn numbers) but I'm confident I can pass the FALANT. And if that gets me in the Navy then awesome.

On a related note, I just found out today that color blindness runs in the family...both sides. Thanks Mom and Dad! A little heads up next time would be great.:D

cp: that sucks, this is a lot to go through to find out your color blind. Did you have your heart set on SNA/SNFO or do you just want to be an officer?

I'm a little more motivated today as I ran the 1.25 miles in 11:30 which I think conservatively puts me at 14:30 (I know it wont take me more than 3 minutes to run that last quarter mile). The biggest difference was I ran on the street to my brother's house instead of around the track (maybe the track just bores me to death).

*I know this still sucks but its getting better

Damn dude! lol.. yeah... go for a scenic run. Granted your PRT will probably be on a track... but to get your distances up, go run.... somewhere. lol... I get bored outta my gourd running in circles, and it reflects in my time. Plus running an out and back somewhere... the next time you run it.. you can play the mental game of telling yourself "Ok... I made it this far last time... so I know I can do it again... and maybe tack on a little extra." Don't go looking to run another 1/4 mile or anything each time... maybe just another 50-100 yards. You don't have to measure it out or anything... just to the next driveway, or a coulpe street signs down. Next thing you know... you are running an extra 1/2 - 1 mile. It's a game. Your body can do a lot more than your mind thinks it can. The trick is occupying your mind enough to push through. Your mind is your biggest enemy when you are doing stuff like that. It will start looking for any and every excuse to quit. Now if you are about to go into cardiac arrest... I'd advise listening to it... but not if it's just your legs are sore.

PR1H i guess this isnt the norm but my OR told me we run around the building he is in So its a little better than the track but ill prob still have to run around it 3 times

Actually doesn't sound that out of the ordinary. I had to proctor several PRT's this last cycle, some were on a track, one was 3.25 laps around the drill hall, one was an out and back, and one was really out of the norm... they drove the participants to a spot, dropped them off, and that was the start point. They ran back to where they'd done the push ups and sit ups 1.5 miles away. Pretty much a straight shot. For now with just working on getting your cardio and muscular endurance up though, do what I mentioned above. Remember, if you can run 3 miles at a decent pace, you'll have plenty left in the tank during your 1.5, even if it is on a track. :)

cpwhit1...My son Mike grew up wanting to be a Tailhook Pilot like Pop. Graduated SDSU w/ degree in Aero Eng. in '88. Applied for SNA/OCS... things went well 'til failing color vision test/retest. Not wanting his other USN options, he tried the USNR recruiter, & found an available avenue he was qualified for: Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer (AMDO). His Officer Indoctrination was at NAS Pensacola.

While he couldn't fly, he found a drill slot in the "weekend warrior" aviation community @ NAS/NOTS China Lake, CA. Over the 20 years of his service, he has been activated for two 9-12 mo. tours in Iraq & one in Korea. He is a senior O-5 now & is very satisfied with his Reserve career. His civilian job is as a Senior Engineer (GS type) with FRC SW (NavAir) at NAS North Island, managing a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) for the F/A-18 Hornet. This job also sent him back to SDSU for his Aero MS degree in the mid-'90s.
*Don't know what your major/degree is in??

Point is, there are other options for aviation candidates w/ color vision problems. Just one of the options to consider. Good luck!:thumbup_1
