Hold on... does this mean that those of us who were prorec'd Y last week will be going to OCS Aug 25 or before?!!

That seems a little too quick for me. I saw AW user GISpirate12 was prorec'd Y in May 2013, and has an OCS date for Sept 2013 (assuming this is a start date). That's like 4 months, man.

Sorry, the grad date can be NO EARLIER THAN 1 OCT due to fiscal year 14 starting at that point. Typing error :( ...according to NOR that is the next class that begins.

I will pack my back packs if they need to fill a spot! ohhh this summer flew by. Can't believe it's August, seeing it in print just made me realize it.

My recruiter said I would be getting my FS letter by Sept. 20. That will have my OCS date on it. He said, "Let me put it this way, you won't be home for Christmas." So most likely Oct.-Nov. I'm not sure about you all though.

Yeah there should be a Christmas standdown. I'm sure your recruiter just meant that you won't have commissioned by Christmas.

His recruiter might be an enlisted recruiter that was tossed into recruiting officers, every actual OR knows the OCS schedule and that it includes a Christmas break

There is Xmas break/leave I believe.
I talked to a LTJG today and he said there is a Christmas break.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. So, if you don't mind me asking, how would that work? Would we stay in Newport or would we be able to go back home and come back?

Also, as far as hi-moms dinner and what not, how many guests would each of us be able to invite? Do you guys think they would be staying at nearby hotels or at a Navy lodge? I'm just trying to plan ahead as much as possible. Sorry for all the questions, I feel that you guys have invaluable information.

My OR's a Senior Chief about ready to retire soon. All his applicants got pro-rec this past pilot/nfo board. You're right maybe he doesn't know the OCS schedule, but I know he's an actual OR. There's been a lot of speculation from many of us about everything, but I'm glad we can all come on the forums and get answers out of everyone. ;)

let me rephrase, there are OR's that have gone to the actual OR school, and then there are those that are at the NRD doing enlisted recruiting who complete a qualification standard and are then "OR's", the ones who didn't go to the school often have some gaps.

I can't say from firsthand knowledge, but I'm pretty sure you're allowed to disperse for at least a few days, although if you're not going home for Christmas (too expensive to go home or something like that), you're allowed to stay in Nimitz. At least, that was how it was in the old building; this will be the first Christmas in New Nimitz, so I can't say how that'll go.

As for Hi-Moms, the number of guests depends on the choices of the committee you'll appoint at OCS, comprised of your fellow candidates, who coordinate with your class team (DI/RDC/Class Officer) to make the arrangements. It'll also likely depend on the venue that the committee picks. For my own, I brought six guests, and it ran $80 for me plus $20 per guest. We had it out on the lawn of the O-Club and got a big tent and stuff. Luckily the weather held up and it went great, but you probably can't count on that if you're graduating in winter; I heard last winter they got this blizzard that knocked out the power for awhile, which must've sucked something awful in Old Nimitz. But I digress.

And don't apologize for asking questions, I was the same way a few months ago. It's great that you're trying to go into it more prepared, and I'm happy to help any way I can.

One last bit of advice, for everyone on these forums getting ready for OCS: if your username is derived from your actual name (yours looks like you used the first initial of your first name plus your last name, although I could be wrong), you'd be well advised to change it; I've heard that OCS staff has been known to browse these forums and try to get a feel of who's coming in with the new classes. There's a thread on here for changing your username (just do a search for "username" or something like that) and post what you'd like to change your name to, and the mods'll make it happen. I made the same mistake, and a fellow grad pointed it out, because I used both my name and a picture of myself. You could also argue that it's PII, which you'll learn more about when it's time for some NKO's.
But that's enough rambling for now, let me know if you have any more questions.

I think you just explained a lot about my recruiter. There was a lot she didn't tell me. Obviously it all worked out, but it was pretty frustrating to call and ask what was going on and hear, "Nothing, just wait," as opposed to "The board meets on this day, so you won't hear anything before then." At the time I just assumed they were making me be proactive to prove that I really wanted to be an officer.

Tycho did a good job of explaining Hi-Moms stuff so I'll just address your Christmas break question.

I was there this past holiday season and they split it up into two weeks. Half of the candidates go home for Christmas and the other half go home for New Years. It works out so that both groups get 6 or 7 days off, only 5 days home if you count travel days etc. They moved us to King Hall for the week we were in Newport. Don't know how that will work with the new Nimitz as I was an old Nimitz guy.

When you're not on leave and at OCS, your liberties and stuff you have to do depend on what week you're on. CandiOs were able to go out in town while those of us waiting to start week 6 got a lot of liberty, but on base only. They'll have you doing odd jobs and watches, but no one really messes with you during break. It actually gets pretty boring and everyone just wants to get started again to get it over with.
