I have an add on question actually, which I may have answered by my OR anyway but I'll ask here too...Do we get PCS assistance because ill be going from OK to RI and drop my stuff off in NY on the way at my old house. Being non-prior I was wondering if we did or not, as I feel maybe that is only something you would get once your in the fleet? Correct me if I am wrong in that assumption?

Single no dependents if that helps answer my question too.

Half of the candidates go home for Christmas and the other half go home for New Years.
How did you determine which half of the class got which week? Class standing, lottery? Or did it just work out so that everyone pretty much got what they wanted?

Probably up to the class team. If it's a two-company class, that'd make it easier. Otherwise, assuming everybody wants Christmas off, they might ask for volunteers to take New Year's off instead, to attempt to give some people what they want, and then just volun-tell some others.

I'm pretty sure you don't get PCS to Newport, mainly because you're only there for 3 months. If I recall correctly, you should still get per diem and mileage for the trip, so that'll be quite a chunk of change driving from Oklahoma. Say about ~$500 for per diem (five travel days) and ~$900 in gas money ($0.565 per mile), and they're paying you around 1,400 bucks for a trip you can knock out in two days.

It just worked out everyone got what they wanted. The New Years break had 1 extra day so a lot of people picked that one. A lot of people wanted the break with Christmas for obvious reasons.

Tycho did a good job of explaining Hi-Moms stuff so I'll just address your Christmas break question.

I was there this past holiday season and they split it up into two weeks. Half of the candidates go home for Christmas and the other half go home for New Years. It works out so that both groups get 6 or 7 days off, only 5 days home if you count travel days etc. They moved us to King Hall for the week we were in Newport. Don't know how that will work with the new Nimitz as I was an old Nimitz guy.

When you're not on leave and at OCS, your liberties and stuff you have to do depend on what week you're on. CandiOs were able to go out in town while those of us waiting to start week 6 got a lot of liberty, but on base only. They'll have you doing odd jobs and watches, but no one really messes with you during break. It actually gets pretty boring and everyone just wants to get started again to get it over with.

Interesting change, historically the classes would leave before Christmas and return right after New Years.

Yeah, I wish they still did that. This past year was apparently the first year they did it because they wanted hands on deck to help with the transition to New Nimitz. That didn't end up happening of course because construction is always delayed. Hopefully they restore it to the old way now that the New Nimitz is operational. There wasn't a whole lot to do there when you're limited to on-base liberty. People were pumped to go chill at the NEX.

If they are still splitting it up one week and one week, they were letting priors that had enough leave days in the bank (at least 14) take the whole 2 weeks. Non priors can forget about it.

Hold on... does this mean that those of us who were prorec'd Y last week will be going to OCS Aug 25 or before?!!

That seems a little too quick for me. I saw AW user GISpirate12 was prorec'd Y in May 2013, and has an OCS date for Sept 2013 (assuming this is a start date). That's like 4 months, man.

Dang I just saw this. But yeah man, I got extremely lucky. Fortunately for me, I've been hitting it hard in the gym! Ten, TEN more pounds for me and this guy won't need a stupid tape measure!

Also, I know we are talking about how OCS will operate during the Christmas holidays, but what about those of us who are aviators in the Sep 15 class who are there till Dec 6 with regards to reporting to API? Will they tell us to go home until after the first of the year, or will they still send us down to work some admin duty till we class up?

Hey man, just simply asking a question here that's yet to be answered. I just don't know how it will all work.

I was just joking; when you get to OCS, you'll find that you're not allowed to refer to yourself in the first person, e.g. I, me, my, we, our, and so on. Instead of saying things like "Can I go to the bathroom?" it'll sound something like "Sir, this officer candidate requests permission to make a head call!" More precisely, it'll be:
"Sir, this officer candidate requests permission to speak to Class Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Smith, United States Marine Corps!"
"...speak!"
"Sir, this officer candidate requests permission to make a head call!"

And so when you said...
Ten, TEN more pounds for me and this guy won't need a stupid tape measure!

...this officer flashed back to the good/bad ol' days when saying "I" was always immediately followed by the words "Get on your face right now."

Whew thanks for the heads up there. That's one of the problems this officer candidate ;) will have an issue with. I have a strong feeling I'm going to have to catch myself A. LOT.

Yeah it's a common problem, and the DI's treat it like it's the end of the world. Not sure if you can see this video, but it was posted as public, so it's worth a shot. Even though they're recruits (Marine enlisted boot camp) instead of officer candidates, it's eerily similar.
