Hey, y'all. I just got back onto Air Warriors for the first time in about 15 years and came across this forum. I'm actually the COPT-R OIC if any of you still have any questions about it.

Also, I remember the PVC pipe guy. I had just gotten to HT-18 as a reservist IP when it happened. To this day I'm still impressed that he somehow managed to find a length of PVC pipe at Disneyworld.
What's the funding train looking like for COPT-R? Is it a permanent part of CNATRA syllabus or is it still a "we are trying this out" kind of thing?

Mods, get this man a set of wings under his username! I can definitely vouch for him!

They're in the process of switching from a temporary, Air Force administered contract to a more permanent one run in house. CNAF is now one of the biggest proponents for COPT-R and wants to see it expanded. The process is definitely going to take some time, but I think COPT-R will be around for a long while.

I was trying to be polite.

I know, and it was rhetorical. I compare it to getting rid of SWOS, sure it saved some money in the short term but then our ships started running into other ones with a bit more regularity a few years later. By then the folks responsible for getting rid of SWOS were long gone and the rest of the Navy was left to deal with the consequences.

That is not to say SWOS, or in this case flight school, could be improved upon but I think 'throwing out the old' and starting anew is not a wise path forward. Seeing some of the feedback here about this program along with first and second hand anecdotes about grads from the 'new' USAF pilot training program only reinforce that view for me.

Would be interested to hear your perspective on this - I can't say I've seen too much about the COPT-R program and I have no idea what the new USAF UPT is.

They are retiring the T-1 and 'big wing/heavy' jet pilots now go directly from T-6's to the FTU's (RAG) to train on their 'fleet' aircraft with some sim time in between I believe. I asked some pilots from a squadron I deal with about it and they said there was a noticeable difference in the quality of pilots coming out of the 'new and improved' training (I am...shocked), with a lot more training needed at the operational squadron level to get them up to speed when it was not needed before.

Fighter pilots still go through T-38's, and and now those are picking up some of the slack for the 'heavies' now apparently.

Same general story though, with the services trying to train pilots by doing more with less' and the product may be suffering as a result from what I've read here and talking to USAF pilots having to deal with the product from their own version.

What's your take on the COPT-R students being disadvantaged in flight hours to make HAC later? Will they be able to go to VTs as instructors or other fixed wing career opportunities or will those be closed off? As someone who went HSC -> VT-IP -> airlines, I'm highly skeptical of the program. It seems like a Free Candy advertisement to Ensigns when they don't understand the future ramifications.

Is the program still just opt-in right now?

Are Marines able to participate?

How much time does it take off of the total time to get wings?

While there may not be an explicit prohibition on COPT-R grads going to VT's there'll likely be a practical one, with having to train IP's from scratch a big drain on VT's finite resources.

We brought a bunch of rotary wing guys, mostly USMC, into our T-2 squadron to instruct back in the day. Yes, they'd been through the T34, but long ago. They did alright.

I don't think it'd be that big of a deal.

AF UPT now is contract FAA Private, Instrument, and Commercial - followed by 30 ish hours in the T-6A to wings. For non fighter types it's straight to the FTU -(FRS) for a part 121 like sim syllabus to completion.

For Navy students, are COPT-R graduates going into only Sierras and Romeos, or is there an option for CMV-22s as well? Also if someone doesn't make it through COPT-R or decides to quit, are they funneled back into the standard SNA pipeline, or are they REDESed into another community? Thanks for taking the time to answer questions!
