FY09 STA-21 Soup to selection and beyond MEGA thread

CTT1 D

ENS D
Of the three PRTs prior to selection, I was waived from the first and third (due to transfer and surgery med waiver). To make up for it I sent them copies of all my PRT scores, however no special PRT was required.

In regards to applicants with few credits getting selected... I'm going in with only the CLEP credits I've knocked out since being here in BOOST/NSI and there are others here in similar situations.

I've heard that The Citadel accepts a lot but I never really researched it.

The Citadel doesn't accept much if anything. No nuc school, c school, MTS, or anything other than CLEP and other classes completed at other colleges transferred. I was told that they don't accept much because they would rather make you take them there so they can more money.

As far as how much credit you before starting I only had 3 credits and I have to complete my degree in two years. It is possible. A lot of work but possible. I am attending the Citadel right now and am taking a total of 17 credits for the whole summer and it isn't hard. The fall on the other hand will be some work because I will be taking 23 credits.

For the physical I would get it done yesterday. Make sure it is typed. I had to jump through hoops last year to get that done. It was actually completed before I even sent off my package but was one of the last to get orders because of the physical. If selected in October, keep checking the website, even before October comes you should. After results came out I was told I had 3 years to complete my degree but in late December the website changed and said I only had 2 years. Ed didn't call or email me to let me know. He wasn't going to say anything and just see if I noticed it. So my suggestion is to just take the 2 minutes and check it daily.

How is that possible? The instruction says 3 years to complete a degree. Was your age a factor? Doesn't sound fair but then again life isn't fair.

I'm also curious how many of you were selected your first time applying. I know it doesn't matter and every year might be different. I'm just trying to get a feel for our chances of selection (for us first timers).

You are given 36 months to complete your degree. However certain designators require you commissioned by a specific age. These ages are waiverable only to a point. So if your 27 and picked up for pilot, you need to be commissioned by 29. Just the way the cookie crumbles.

I was picked up last year first time up. In fact a lot of us were. Although there were some who applied four times and then picked up but the majority of whom I've talked with were first or second timers.

That's good news that most people get picked up their first or second time.

What are the procedures for faxing documents after they already received your package? I have the number but do I need to call or email first to inform them of my intentions? What about a cover page? I just got a LOC from an O-7 and would like to include that if possible. After I fax it I assume it will be noted in the package status of my online application.

If it were me I would call Ed and tell him you are going to fax him something, then fax it, then call again to make sure he got it. I would absolutely include a cover sheet.

It was my first time applying last year, and my age was a factor. Depending on where you look the max age for pilot is 29 or 31. I was only given to 29. When I asked why 29 and not 31 Ed told me it was because the communtiy manager can do whatever he wants, and that is what he wanted. Previous years the age limit was 31. I know this because I know guys who were that old when they got commisioned. Ed also told me that if you got selected for CORE and then chose Pilot you had until 31. That doesn't seem fair to me, but I don't really care I got pilot and I will finish my degree in 2 years.

The STA-21 website has flashing text that points to changes in program options eligibility requirements. I caught that easily enough, but when assembling my package, I was going off the OPNAVINST checklist, not the checklist from the website, so I missed the Page 13 and had to have it scanned/emailed to Ed.

I just got a copy of my package from my CCC today, can October get here any sooner? One thing that struck me as strange is I recieved 10's accross the board on my apprisial sheets from my CO and 3 CDR's that sat as board members on my command board and nomination board but the LT's on my boards gave me some 8's and 9's scattered in, does anyone think that will be detrimental to my selection hopes?

I know it says that the CO's recommendation and your personal statement are the most vital to the package. They will definitely review all three boards and the comments each member wrote though. You mentioned your CO's was good so as long as your personal statement is on point then you should be good. Keep in mind an 8 or 9 isn't horrible but I know this is a very competitive program so all 10's would obviously be preferred.

It does seems like time is standing still now. Prior to sending my application off I couldn't believe how fast the 1July deadline was approaching. Now we are only 16 days into the wait, ha!! During the wait I am working on getting my school stuff (enrollment, degree plan, etc) taken care of. Though not selected yet by doing all of these things now will only make it easier once the results do come out. We (hopefully) are going to be busy enough that anything we can knock out now we should. Just my 2 cents.

I asked the same question. Webmaster gave me a good answer, read towards the end of the post.
