FY12 STA-21 Applicants

Manning is becoming a real issue, it feels like. We had Captain's Call on Tuesday and I really wanted to ask what the plan is to address our need for more qualified personnel/training in the face of increased flight hours versus decreased manning, but I figured the Sailors who have been to the boat or dealt with worse would scoff. I feel really bad for the handful of fully qualified guys... they are getting slaughtered. Was it always like this?

How is it at your new place?

No it wasn't always like that, I felt like they were properly manned while i was there. The command i'm at now is really shorthanded and I work twice as hard here as i did there but that might be the difference between shore and sea duty lol.. But i do enjoy being back on sea duty, there is a lot more morale and camaraderie here.

I feel your pain. It seems that Big Navy requires more and more and is expecting these requirements to be met with less and less. We have a multitude of FC's that have graduated A school and have been on holds for months - sometimes over a year, yet we're cancelling classes at the "C" school because we don't have enough personnel to teach the course. I don't see this changing anytime soon as there is more and more emphasis on saving money ... sad that it has come to that. It's also why I'm not too confident in number of personnel they accept for this program.

So possible good news for NFO applicants, I guess they might be hurting on NFO manning, cause a friend of mine in the STA-21 program at ODU, told me today that her school just sent a bunch of Midi's NFO and are trying to talk some Pilot applicants to switch over to NFO, so may be a good sign, maybe not!

We aren't actually as old as we say we are, the Navy was disbanded in 1783.

College: Have an AAS... currently have 88 credits at University of Connecticut with a 3.86 GPA
SMART: Can't remember how many credits but without my personal credits it's somewhere around 70, but the school's I am looking at will only accept 60 total so I will still have 60 to do.
CLEP = 6 credits - English Comp. with Essay
High School: Don't have exact GPA with me but was bad, failed senior year and graduated a year late near bottom of class
Awards: 1 NAM, 1 Good Conduct, 1 Admirals Letter, 1 CO letter, 1 JSOQ
Rate/Rank: STS1
TIS: 6 Years (1 month short of this at time of application, now have 2 Good Conducts but did not receive second until 8JUL)
ACT: 25
WARFARE QUALS: Submarine Warfare
Collateral Duties: Served as Ship's Oceanographer, Ship's Sound Silencing Petty Officer and currently serve as Sonar "A" School Leading Petty Officer

So I've been silently creeping the forum for a few days now, thought I'd put my two cents in.. HR applicant here, RP by rate. Attached to a Marine command on Okinawa. I was the only applicant that I am aware of on island. There is but ONE URL CO here on island and I've had to complete the entire package myself. As for my stats, not too hot on the boards, but my CO (Marine Colonel) had a successful package before. Good on the Leadership and Academic Potential though.. Anyway, couple questions. Does anyone know if the results are given to Flags beforehand similar to advancement? Also, what changes if any are made to a package on the second application? I understand the updated paperwork, but if they don't provide feedback are we left to just guess which parts were less appealing?

I heard about that. Some were sent to the hospital ship to do nothing!!! But STA-21 numbers broad cast over 3 years. Totally impossible for nows calculation. 225 officer selections is really small compaired to 3 years from now. It they are going to select 125 officers, that is really nothing. If they wanted to save money, they would not do STA-21, period! This is a luxury. But, it will not be worse than last year due to the already hurting officer population. I chose NFO because the pilot option was off limits. I am too old. I didn't see to many applying for NFO. The same ratio actually. But Pilot is always selective. Usually the guys are young and go for core also......don't worry about your chances man, its not like they are looking for astranuats. Good luck

I'm with ya! I just realized I never mentioned that i would need an age waiver for secondary of Core MISTAKE!!! I hope that I made less mistakes with my primary option. Is there anyone else out there for the Oceanography (1800) option that would be willing to swap information with me? Whether or not we get picked up I think there's a lot to learn from eachother!

your comment about an age waiver for CORE got me thinking, and realizing I didn't put one in either. Then i looked at the instruction, there are no exceptions to age waivers in regards to the CORE option

ohhey! This time last year I think someone was stalking the CNO to speculate if he was able to sign the results...blah blah...did anyone do that this year?
