International Burn a Qu'ran Day

Part of the problem here is the loose use, or mis-use, of labels.

I think what Nasty was really referring too are the obnoxious fundamentalists who claim to represent Christianity but actually miss the whole point of Christianity in their zealous rants on any given issue. Such as this guy Jones who wants to burn the Korans or that guy Phelps who protests military funerals with signs that God hates gays.

Christianity was considered a sect of the Jewish faith and was originally called "The Way". The Jews at the time of Christ thought that the Messiah would be a political leader who would free them from Roman authority and set up a perpetual Davidic kingdom on earth. Therefore, they see Jesus Christ as a failure. Christians understand that Christ did not come to free man from political authorities but from slavery to sin.

Not to argue, but example only. With respect to Presbyterian, there are several organizations, vastly different within the presbýteros. I belong to *PCUSA, wife belongs to *OPC. Our disagreements are many. We have a female Pastor; she and OPC believe this is not biblical. Were there one defining diffference between the two, I would likely say that the OPC believes in the bible, literally, as written today; PCUSA takes a broader view and "interperts". Example: I think it took more than 6 days.

Evangelicals hate Jews? What a hateful, demented statement. The Best Man at my wedding was a Rabbi. I could continue to list erxamples.

*PCUSA = Presbyterian Church of the USA
*OPC = Orthodox Presbyterian Church

And I am going to go with the 28%
 
Part of the problem on top of this is that the damn media is the one blasting it everywhere. I mean these r'tards can do this if nobody is watching and nobody will get hurt, but the media has to blast these crazy ass people all over tv.

On top of that its just sad that these people are going to abuse their rights to endanger the lives of the men that gave them the right to do so

My own eyes and ears, as an observer of the 'pan-Arab media'. ;) Of course I spoke too soon and the story has gained steam in the past day in the Middle Eastern press. Particularly after the statements from General Patreaus, General Austin, Secretary Clinton and Robert Gibbs hit the news, and finally with the President now. It isn't dominating the press by any stretch but it has become a bigger story int eh past day.

As for those questioning why all the US and allied officials are making statements against it, it is a deliberate effort at Strategic Communications/Messaging. The thinking goes if the targeted audience, in this case Muslims, see that the leadership is condemns it they are less likely to blame the United States as a country and largely blame the idiot doing it. Does it work? Not even the exerts can say, but I think it is worth the effort.

It would be a mistake to conflate those denominations as a whole as Evangelical, especially when the branches of those denominations that are associated with the NAE are often much smaller than the 'mainline' branches of the denominations. Details, I know, but important ones.

I've spent zero time on the ground in country, so I pose these questions:

Is this REALLY going to up recruiting efforts/success in the Arab world for Al Qaida? Weren't the radical assholes that are really going to get worked up over this already radical assholes before the Annual Burn a Koran Day celebration? Weren't the people that they were going to convert into new radical assholes already susceptible to becoming radical assholes before all of this?

I'm thinking that these people are going to be pissed off and attack our troops no matter what we do. We moved out of Saudi Arabia, we cater to their every whim so as not to offend them (meaning: the guy in the turban can go through airport security, while the 90 year old white lady gets frisked), we will let them build their precious mosque on top of the ground they 'conquered', and still, they are pissed off at us.

I agree that this whole thing is in poor taste, but, fuck it, let the guy burn the books. He's not going to change the whole damn world with his little 3' x 3' fire.

Actually, Anglican in the US is a relatively new offshoot of the Episcopal church. People essentially got frustrated with the direction the Episcopal church was going, and formed a new church based off of the Church of England. Bam! Anglicans were born, at least in the US. There are a handful of Anglican Churches in the US that no kidding fall under the Archbishop of Canterbury, but most of them are disgruntled Espiscopals. Most would NOT classify themselves as Evangelicals, however - the term "Anglican" has numerous meanings... One of the founding members of the Anglican Church in North America is the Anglican Mission in the Americas... A member of the NAE. The Anglican Church in North America are the disgruntled Episcopalians, who fall under the American Anglican Council. Pretty much everything on the "Anglican" side of the AAC are considered Evangelical, and everything on the The Episcopal Church side of the American Anglican Council is not.

Can you tell that I'm a disgruntle Epsicopalian who's thinking about making the switch?

Largely yes, but it can serve as a spark and a rallying point for those who may be on the fence or looking for a new target. Denmark has become one of the biggest targets, probably earning the bronze after the US in the UK for terrorist targets in the western world, almost solely because of the Muhammad cartoons. But for the US, it will likely just reinforce people's existing biases about us and earn the idiot 'pastor' a bullseye on his ass.

Just so you don't carry a gun when you get 'disgruntle' (sic) and go to the Communion rail ...

My Episcopal priest was 'old school' when I went through confirmation classes ... he referred to the 'Roman Catholic' church on the one hand ... and then the 'Anglican Catholic' church on the other ... :)

Ahhhhhh ... the Episcopal Church in the 'ol days. I loved it: all you had to learn was how to read the Wall Street Journal and a few techniques to improve your tennis backhand ... :icon_wink
 
Near as I can tell (structure of the church, and politics aside) the Anglican church is a Rite I Episcopal Church using a 1927 Book of Common Prayer...

Ah, yes. "Through your good taste, you shall be judged", is the biblical text followed back then. ;)

My father started going to an Anglican Church a few years before he passed away. It was all Rite 1 (which my church growing up had at the 8 o'clock service) 1927 Book of Common Prayer. I went with him a few times; not much difference in the service, just in the leadership/politics.

If memory serves, that's the 'Onward Christian Soldiers' battle-cry of the church I knew ... 'cept I think we said 'ye' ... :)
