July 2013 and/or Rolling Board

I am going tomorrow to get the EKG and I have to pay out of pocket since Tricare says I do not medically need one But good news is that I will have the results tomorrow! My OR just threw me through a loop when he stated that he thought the board had already convened.

What makes him think that the board already met??

I had a bit of a high heart rate when I went to MEPS. Being the only officer applicant there, I was the first to go through everything and the heart rate/blood pressure machine was first. The lady asked if I was nervous and I said "just a little" so we waited a minute and switched machines. All good after that!

I talked to my OR today as well, he seems confident we should get results within the next two weeks as planned.

Spoke to Mr. Williams earlier today (OCS Help desk) and he said that the board is Monday as scheduled. Called to check my package status Pro-Boarded and ready for Monday!

That's exactly what I was wondering from my own recruiter! I was thinking that they would all be on the same page about when the board convenes. July 20th and July 15th are two veeeerrrrrryyyy different dates to a nervous, impatient person!

My MEPS experience went pretty smooth. It's a lot of sitting, standing, waiting, listening to orders and filling out paperwork. They have it set up to where you go to different "stations" to get different tests done, and in between you just sit and commiserate with all the other half-asleep Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and CG applicants. It is mostly enlisted applicants, but I was with 3 other Officer applicants as well. Fortunately, there were no medical hiccups for me, so no extra waiver responsibilities. Aside from the occasional awkward alone time you get with the doc, it's not that bad. Good luck!

My MEPS experience went great and I went though without any problems besides my heart rate but when I saw the doctor in MEPS he did my heart rate again and it was down to normal so he said he wrote to excuse my higher heart rate but apparently it didn't get excused. :/

My MEPS was a little bit more stressful. Make sure to have all your medical paperwork done prior to going, including the proper documentation for any medical condition or for any procedures done to you. My longest wait was on getting a vision waiver. Had to go down to MEPS 3 times and then wait to see if I was able to get a waiver signed; my vision was -9.25 with a 1.25 astigmatism. In the end, got the waiver and the people at MEPS are very helpful. I don't know if that's because I was trying for officer or what but some people say the MEPS staff is rude/mean.

I had a pretty smooth time at MEPS. The only ones who seemed to have issues were the people straight out of high school that couldn't follow simply directions, i.e. sit straight, speak clearly, and do as you are told. I got out by noon as I drove myself to MEPS in STL since I live about 3hrs away. The only issue I ran into was low blood pressure (93/62) which they checked a second time to confirm since anything under 90/60 needs a waiver.

The doc. I had my one and one medical with was a nice older gentlemen who sailed me straight through as he had a chemistry undergrad and it is my undergrad as well. We essentially talked basic chemistry and he made sure I didn't have any major medical problems. Your millage may vary.

I hope you get that all worked out! It sounds like you may just need to get some clarification in to prove that you are okay. Do you think you can go back and have them check again?

One of the advantages of living in the DC area (you know, in addition to the reasonable beltway traffic and amicable politicians...) is that I could get a pre-commissioning physical at Walter Reed military hospital in Bethesda in lieu of MEPS. That was a two-step process; about a half day of blood labs, hearing and visual tests, dental exam, etc, followed by a one-hour review of results with a doc a couple weeks later. My recruiter needed to set up the initial appointment but from there I was able to do all of my own scheduling directly with the hospital, just like in the civilian world.

I highly recommend that path if you can get it - the whole process was very efficient, saved me from taking a bunch of leave (0730 appointments before work FTW), and the hospital staff treated me like a human being throughout.
