I'm sorry to tell the hard truth ... but if the Stars and Stripes had not flown over the Territory for the past 100 years the place would look like Fiji --- i.e., a third world country.

Driving around the island in some of the less tourist spots, I believe that. There are parts of Hawaii that look third-world, and I've only been to Oahu.

You ought to go to the Big Island. Some places there, ie Puna (I think), make you think you are in a 3rd world country.

Especially if we put them in range of a future ballistic missile threat ??? Maybe that's too radical thinking (?) --- but Yuma, El Centro, etc .... what do they all have in common? Minimal encroachment and good airspace --- that's what counts today.

BTW ... the city wheels in Oak Harbor are buzzing about the EF-18 coming here --- supposedly "for sure" ... we'll see. I hope so ..... if for no reason other that to have the Commissary/Exchange for the next 20 years ... :)

If it is an ICBM....West Coast, East Coast or the Mid West it don't matter because it will be all over that... :icon_tong

I didn't say "I"CBM .... I said "ballistic missile"..... and one would suppose there are all sorts of range capabilities available to various missiles, just like there are all sorts of delivery vehicles, "I"CBM or not. One size doesn't fit all. For example, to quote from Article II of "The Treaty Between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on the Elimination of Their Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles" -- State Department website (*whew* ... State Department -- wordy or what?) , in force June 1, 1988:

For the purposes of this Treaty:

1. The term "ballistic missile" means a missile that has a ballistic trajectory over most of its flight path. The term "ground-launched ballistic missile (GLBM)" means a ground-launched ballistic missile that is a weapon-delivery vehicle.

5. The term "intermediate-range missile" means a GLBM or a GLCM having a range capability in excess of 1000 kilometers but not in excess of 5500 kilometers.

So ... 5500 kilometers =3,417.5 miles .... hardly going to reach the East Coast from China or N. Korea .... but Hawaii? ALOHA.

I see you've been to Kalihi/Palolo/Waipahu/Ha'ula/any place on the map that isn't right in town.

Yep, been through a couple of those places. When I go to a place, I like to visit the tourist areas AND the non tourist areas. It's like that in Key West. Key West is GREAT, but until you've ventured off Key West and into the other keys, you haven't seen crap.

btw, my parents live in Hawaii. They live in Hawaii'Kai.

Principi

Here's a quote from a VA Beach paper:

"WAVY News 10 has learned the Florida Governor got involved after the Chairman of the BRAC Commission, Anthony J. Principi, wrote to him a week after Oceana was put on the potential closure and realignment list. Principi's letter asked Governor Bush for a written pitch concerning moving Oceana's planes to Cecil Field.

While Virginia officials won't go as far as calling Principi's action unethical, they do characterize it as unusual and unorthodox"

What is up with the chairman of the BRAC commission and Oceana? He seems to be on a personal mission to shut the place down. The Navy and DOD have told this clown they want to keep KNTU open, but this guy won't quit. Something shady is going down..........

I read in the Corpus paper today that the Navy said they can keep Oceana open for another 6 years max. Makes sense to me to move them down to Cecil, as many others have stated the encroachment issue doesn't really exist there. And from what I've read it seems like the VA Beach locals are hell bent on closing the base.

From what I have heard from a close friend in VA Beach Government, they do not want NAS Oceana to close, they just do not want noisy airplanes flying in and out of the base.

Makes me laugh .... and cry .... at the same time. This is EXACTLY what the political "backchannel" boys/rumor mills were doing at Whidbey 10 years ago .... I love it!!! Politic and $$$$$ ..... $$$$$ and politics .... it NEVER changes.

BTW ... one of the County Commish's just dropped by and asked me to "rejoin his team" on the County Planning Commision ..... did it for 6 years a while back ..... don't they ever learn ......???? :)

Well, that would be right in line with what the guy that directed Stealth was saying about the future of the Navy.

If your derigible is based in a floating hangar, does that count as a sea or a shore tour? I could see alot of problems developing between the derigible and the blimp communities if they let the derigible guys get sea time.
