I know we get the chance to shoot the M9, but is it also for qualification or marksmanship ribbon? Or is it just for familiarization?

Just familiarization when I was there. I've heard they've even dropped that and replaced it with a CPR course, but that bit is hearsay.

When I was there a little over a year ago there was no M9 familiarization - but the OTCN facebook page has shown pictures of the candidates with pistols recently so they likely brought it back.

When I left, some of the staff were pushing for CPR and other medical training for the candios. The occasional medical emergency without trained staff around prompted the discussion.

I just received my Final Select Letter, and I will be heading up for July 14th.

I had a quick question about the money. Do we need to have a good bit of money saved up in a bank account to be used at OCS, or do you just use the money you make while you are there?

You don't really need a huge chunk of change since most the items you'll be purchasing you'll be able to put on credit and pay whenever you're checking out. I'd recommend having a few hundred dollars available just in case though.

For prior enlisted single folk did your BAH stop at OCS? I asked PSD and the pay clerk told me he doesnt know lol. He said he would look into it and never called me back. I love PSD. I would be living in government housing so I was thinking no.....but OCS is listed as an intermediate duty station and wont receive PCS orders until halfway through. Last time I PCS'd and went to a intermediate duty station my BAH didnt stop, rate just got changed to the new ultimate duty station once I finally checked in.

Also what uniform items should I bring? I know the personnel inspections will be pretty strict. I have 3 sets of NWU's in good condition they are just a little faded from washing, black dress shoes, PT gear, green sea bag, etc. I would say most of my uniform items are in good condition just not "brand new" condition.

As a PS1, I can tell you that your BAH is not going to stop. As far as the uniforms, see the website below for all your future OCS questions. It is very helpful.

The "items to bring" page at http://www.ocs.navy.mil/ocs_requiredpaperwork.asp says "MINIMALIST SHOES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED AT OCS"

What exactly separates "minimalist" from regular shoes? I ask because I run in new balances that have somewhat flexible soles and no raised heels. The intention is similar to minimalist shoes (helps fix my tendency to heel strike, strengthens lower leg/foot muscles), but there's nothing too wacky about them. They have laces, can be worn with socks, and the toes are all in one compartment.

I would like to know the answer to this as well, before I go out and buy a pair.

If they don't stick out, I wouldn't worry about it. Vibram 5 fingers stick out pretty easily, those not so much.

Ask yourself if you'd be comfortable running around with those on grass, mud, sand, gravel, and road. If yes and they look normal then you'll be fine. Worst case scenario is they make you buy new sneakers at the NEX.

Don't sea lawyer this, just buy "running shoes." Use some horse sense, a "regular" running shoe will cause you minimal discomfort in mud or if you had to shovel snow in the winter. Here "were" mine:

And here is a shameless plug for what I wear now:

Thanks. I just was not sure what "minimalist" shoes were. I've never heard of that term before. I did a Tough Mudder a while back, so no stranger to running in mud or grass. That was only for about 3 and a half hours though. I imagine doing it daily will take its toll. Just buck up and do what you're told I suppose.

If you're in-shape enough to run a tough mudder, then you're in-shape enough to pass OCS with a normal pair of cross-training sneakers.
