Really both are hazing...but the failed card was expected.
"Failed card" came from the T-28/H-34 days when the then electro-mechanical Radio Magnetic Indicator had a failure mode where literally the compass card failed and remained stationary. The procedure was irrelevant in more modern aircraft.

But yet we all were still hazed by this training, when its applicability left the building. Prob same/same for other stuff going back over 20 yrs.
