The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

"We lookin fo you. We gon find you!"
Since this is a flight jacket thread...I saw a Citation pilot the other day in the FBO I work at wearing a Navy flight jacket with lots of Tomcat, Top Gun, Fallon, and different carrier patches on. I always make it a point to speak to pilots I meet at the FBO who flew in the Navy or Marines. I said to him, "I like your jacket, how long were you in the Navy?" To which he replied, "I wasn't." I turned around and walked off. Does this kind of thing irritate those of you who have earned your wings of gold? I think it would piss me off if I were a commissioned officer in the Navy and an aviator and then I met this Citation pilot who thinks it's cool to be seen in Navy gear.

Grade A tool.

That's what I figured. That guy has to have gotten an earful before in another FBO. I meet a lot of former Naval Aviators that fly for flight departments, charters or private owners that come in and out of the FBO. So, it's not outside the realm of possibility that he would stumble across an actual former Tomcat driver that gives him hell for it.

When I worked line service in college, we had some Japanese students on an exchange program (at the part 141 school at my airport), and I remember one of them had a nomex jacket, complete with nametag patch, wings, some P-3 cruise patches and LT bars attached to the collar (wtf). At first I thought maybe he had been a JDF P-3 pilot or something, but I got a closer look one day and it was apparent that he had just picked the thing up second-hand somewhere. I guess some people just want to have the "look"....after all you can buy all that imitation gear through places like Sporty's. Must be for all those wealthy dudes who weekend fly their homebuilts and want to play pilot for the day. Doesn't bother me, although I don't have wings on my chest yet either so who knows....

I don't see why anybody would be that pissed about it. After all, these guys are trying to imitate Navy/Marine Corps pilots. Being a dick about it would be like being a dick to your little brother who tries to copy everything you do. If you have wings of gold and are insecure enough that some dumbass civilian in a fake flight jacket really gets under your skin, maybe you are the tool.

Completely wrong answer ... ever heard of tradition, honor, commitment, the Brotherhood .. ???

I don't 'card them' unless the subject of their perfidity comes up ... I ignore them as they are the pretenders; the losers, the insecure ... the 'wannabe's' ... but: IF the subject comes up ... :)

Bottom line: you will have to repeat the Naval Aviation course after you get your Wings, if you sell them so cheaply.

I agree w/A4s. All of those patches and bars are earned, not paid for at a surplus store. I would feel very awkward walking around in a jacket like that.

Well, at least the guy didn't try and bullshit about it.
"What squadron were you in?"
"Um...it's classified."
"What?"
"Hey, I don't have to prove anything to you, asshole!"
"...Skeeter?"

Though honestly, you'd think that someone who spends that much time in and around aviation would know it's a career chock-full of ex-military pilots and he will get called out on it.

Go earn some wings and then make that determination if you "wouldn't mind" someone pretending to be a Naval Aviator.

Personally, I'd flip my shit on them. Perhaps I am a tool after all.....
