I in fact did not get selected. Recruiter mentioned one of my panel appraisers gave me a 5 stating I'm probably better for 1815 or the warrant program -__- while I got a 10s and 9s from the others. Thinks this was the issue. But idk, round two in September I guess.

That would indeed kill an application, I would see if your recruiter knows if the panel interviewers are the same ones they use regularly as ours were.

Well, I received word from my recruiter this afternoon that I was not selected. Thought I had a fairly solid package but evidently not. I plan to reapply one more time for the Fall board.

I’m open to any suggestions from anyone here on actions I can take to be more competitive. Unfortunately I can’t change my age, degree, or civilian career.

That makes no sense, who told you that you had a 5 for OIC, that is the most important score and how will the OIC view you as an officer if he gave you that low of a score?
My recruiter told me it was a 5, I obviously haven’t seen the appraisal sheet myself just going of word of mouth.

Without knowing much details, if you’re non prior service you’re already ineligible.

Made an account just to reply to this. I'm also non-prior service and working towards applying for the upcoming selection board. Is there a limit to the amount of times you can apply? Not sure what you meant by saying "if you're non prior service you're already ineligible".

In contact with a recruiter of course, but would like to get an answer here before I go to him with a potentially stupid question. I couldn't find anything online about ineligibility after multiple applications. Or being non-prior service for that matter.

EDIT: Late night brain moment. Just noticed you can see peoples age on this site if you check their profile, for posterity he may have been referring to the persons age (47) combined with non-prior service. Which from my memory does result in ineligibility. Perhaps "remediable" with a waiver...

It is possible to get a waiver at age 47 for 1835. I'm 53, have no military experience, and received a waiver for this board. My scores were good (OIC: 10; Board: 10,10,9).

I wasn't selected, I suspect due to to my limited ROI to the Navy.

I will be applying again, and am open to any advice or insight.

From what I have been told Intel seem to be more competitive than 1825 which I am trying to get into. At 53 you will not even be able to retire from the military due to age restictions. They say there is a waiver for everything but I doubt they would keep you around after 64 unless you were in some critical role that is waiting to be filled:

Mandatory Retirement Ages:
  • Officers (below general/flag): 62
  • General/Flag Officers: 64
  • Warrant Officers: 62
For some context I am 46, but have 20 years of service already so if I end up converting over to the officer ranks I would still easily serve until atleast 60 thus providing a solid 10+ years that the Navy will get an ROI on. Considering your scores I would have to say this is probably why you didn't get selected but I don't sit these boards and I rely on my recruiter and information from people here to get more details. If anyone else would like to provide further clarification please feel free.

Those that were selected, you mind sharing your package items? (i.e., did you have Flag-O recs, letter to the board, other items outside the reqs?)
I submitted what was required. I’ve read of some applicants receiving LORs from IWC senior officers (or even flag officers and/or congressmen it seems?) but personally, I felt LORs from my direct managers (current and previous) would have more meaning since they actually oversee my work and performance. I felt several important things to communicate were: 1) why the Navy and why Intel (motivational statement and interviews), 2) clearly outlined how my civilian job/team have prepared the possibility of me being selected (tangible plans/preparation for when I will be away for training and/or possible deployments), and 3) Emphasized in my motivational statement and interviews that I’m not doing this because I’m looking for how the Navy can benefit me. I genuinely want to do this because I feel I can contribute to the Navy (relating my experience to the Navy’s mission).

That was my approach anyways. Be honest and open.
