Careful with this...We are in fairly good shape fiscally at the moment

You might want to try qualifying your remarks. I will tell you what I see: The AF is doing a RIF of 40000 troops and officers to be able to afford maintenance of old airframes and purchasing new ones; the assignment system for our troops was just frozen for the past month because of a shortage of PCS funds, leaving our guys with DEROS dates coming up up sh*t creek, and all units on base have seen an average of 30-40% budget cuts each year for the 2 years I've been there with no reduction to the flying schedule or support of the mission.

We are not in good shape fiscally.

Hot damn. I'd cross the aisle for that guy if I thought he had a chance. :)

(Except in the sense that his complete lack of foreign policy experience would be a disaster waiting to happen.)

Same thing with constantly pointing out that his middle name is Hussein............wait, I just did it too........

Jeanne Moos was on CNN asking people on the streets of New York "Should we try to stop Barack Hussein Obama?"
She had a lot of people saying "Yes, I do." "You bet".
JM: "Do you feel he's a threat to national security?"
Person on the street: "Absolutely!"
JM: "Do you feel your safety is threatened?"
Person on the street: "Of course. I'm a New Yorker!"

Ahh, the electorate.

Does anyone think that Obama is the Antichrist?
somebody AF student in my class the other day said that his quick rise to fame made him fear that he was the Antichrist... (No JOKE)

Then I got some e-mail forward saying that we should not vote for Obama because his dad was a muslim

WHERE DO WE GET THESE PEOPLE?

New Jersey just changed their state constitution so that idiots could vote. Hopefully the AF student and the e-mailer are in states that still don't allow idiots to vote.:D

I voted for Bill Richardson. It looks as though he actually cut taxes in NM.

Hillary. Too liberal for me even though she seems to be moving to the center, I don't buy it. Plus, I don't want to have to look at her for 4 years. As to the fact that she is a woman: I would prefer a man as a president but ultimately I am going to vote on how a candidate stands on the issues and not their sex. Actually, Hillary is probably more of a man than most liberal men.

Obama. I don't care if he is black or white or whatever. He seems to be way to liberal for me. I am concerned about his muslim background. But what worries me more is that he is kind of ducking the issue. If he would come out and give a little history about himself and explain how he has changed over the years, I may be less concerned.

The Economist (a damn good magazine by the way and a whole lot better than any of the American 'News' magazines) had a good point that the US people desperately want to elect a minority or a female into office, especially a black person. They argued that it would validate to most Americans that we live in a free and equal society, a good comparison would be that it would confirm the possibilty of the 'American Dream'. They argued that this was the time for Obama to run since the Democrats will probably take the White House in 2008 and he would be out of the running for 8 years, and he might be yesterday's news by then.

And when women make up roughly half of the electorate, I really think a female cadidate for President is very electable. My Mom would love to see a woman inth ewhite House, she jsut doesn't like Hillary. The question I have heard asked by her and her friends is "Where would she be without her husband?" A prominent lawyer o rsome kind of mover or shaker, but they agree she would not be a candidate for President. I could care less if she was a woman, she is just way too calculating and 'political' for my tastes. She is Slick Willie without the charm or warmth.........:(

I like/read The Economist as well, but I think they're way off base. Mainstream America is nowhere near that idealistic. There's no way the Southern tier red states are going to vote for anything but a white male. As for women being half of the electorate, first off, women tend not to vote - especially women under 50. Second, women all hate each other so much that there's no way they're going to elect another woman. If your theory were true, the percentage of female office-holders wouldn't be so tiny. I also think there's going to be a statistical anomaly in some of the polls we see in the next couple years. Lots of people are going to "say" that they'd vote for a woman or a black man because they think that saying otherwise isn't PC. When they're alone in the voting booth, they'll express their true feelings. Not saying that it's right or wrong, that's just how it is.

Sounds like a budgeting and management problem, not a funding one. ;)

The fact that the Air Force's budget is shrinking doesn't mean that the military is underfunded. Neither do strength cuts as you point out. What those indicate are that at a national strategic level, the Air Force is seeing larger reductions in strength than any other branch. This trend by the way has been constant for the last 15 years. It is nothing new and it is occuring because in the larger strategic sense, the Air Force has had a proportionally smaller role in the national defense picture.

Further, while things like the PCS problem that you point are unfortunate, they don't indicate that there is a inappropriate level of funding...they indicate budgetary choices made within the Air Force, as you yourself point out. Don't forget that the Air Force chooses where alot of its money is spent. You still are dealing with an average airframe age about half of your Navy and Marine Corps counterparts.

I'm not arguing that its all sunshine and roses, but on the average, the servicemember today is better trained, payed and taken care of than when I joined. Yes, we are spending alot of time away from home...but guess what...

Besides....it couldn't be too bad over there...they still had the money to send you to Rio for a month for Christ sake...I know that Portugese (sp?) language immersion was mission critical but...;)

He wrote a book about his past in 95, it detailed his experiences growing up, from cocaine use, to reconciling his mixed race heritage. His "muslim background" doesn't bother me so much as his super liberal voting record, but eh, if I have to vote for a democrat...
