I will say, I really wish comms brevity and conciseness was enforced across all communities to the level that TACAIR holds even their newest students to. I gained a new appreciation for how the pointy-nose folks do business after flying with and across from folks from the TACAIR world during my time at CNATRA.

They do, but it's for not, apparently. For years, I would ask why helicopters have to give their life story to ground. NASNI is the worst, but Mayport was pretty bad. There was one stretch when I was the Safety Officer and the Tower Chief was a just-arrived Warrant and I was able to talk to him about how silly the calls are. He agreed (I think he may have come from Oceana or Lemoore) and we were able to just give a souls, fuel and SAR capability call. That lasted about a month.

I shit you not, on more than one occasion I was launching IFR and Ground asked for all of my details.

"All of that is on the DD-175 I filed."

<Chaos in the tower ensues>

Yes.

I think a lot of it comes from Whiting where every helo student learns to tell the world their life story, so that becomes the norm for the community. But NASNI's Base Ops manual is also pretty silly by requiring all of it in black and white.

Dude you are 100% right about NASNI ops specifically. My first time asking for clearance, was about a 5 min back and forth, asking for type, equipment code, souls on board, other nonsense. Dude, just file us for the same g damn stereo route we have been using for 2 weeks already. Maybe it is helo crews becoming servants to the idiots at base ops and it becoming a thing, more than it is helo people in general.

Having gone to Oceana and Lemoore, it's better than the unintelligible ground calls you guys do. I get it, your flight schedule is in the tower and they know everything about you already so you can get away with brevity. Ain't the same everywhere my man.

I don’t know how “taxi two with Lima” is unintelligible, but spoiler alert, the airlines are no different “push from C5 with India”

Just go VFR

Would do so happily if it made everyone else shut up. I presume they are also VFR though. Will say that today, it was blissfully quiet as apparently helos enjoy 3 day weekends. For the first time, there weren’t 800 helicopters popping up in all directions centered around midfield, and all talking about it at once. I initially thought my comments here were somehow taken to heart, but then i realized it was Friday after 1300 and it just probably isn’t a work time for north island anymore

FWIW i still love you guys, some of my best buds flew rotors, but my brain is still recovering from the constant chatter.

Interestingly, Base Ops actually made the IFR stereo routes for helos easier at one point. The last time I was flying out of there, they dropped the actual numbered routes (thus making comms more annoying) but they also did away with having to file the 1801 if you weren't taking a stereo route.

I don't know why they did this, but since your flight plan would always be lost when you faxed it over to Base Ops anyway, just declaring it on the radio was an improvement.

I think the theory amongst the pilots was that the Base Ops fax machine finally completely broke and they had no way to receive flight plans. I could totally believe that.

You cant fire me dude, I already quit!!!!!
The late/great SkidKid was one of the 2 AD dudes in a reserve HMLA that deployed to Iraq. He said the squadron had arm patches that said something to the effect of "We quit once, we'll do it again!" I thought it was funny.

I've tried to find the patch, but have been unsuccessful.

Edit: I can't remember if it was we/we'll or I/I'll

Had drinks with him and a couple other Marine AW folks when I was in San Diego. That was, like, 20 years ago. Come to think of it, I've met a lot of AW folks over the years IRL... always a fun time.
He's honestly the only reason I created an account on here after being on an Oki deployment with him. I still have DMs with him from that time period that I reread every now and then...would love to have a beer with any of you fuckers. 😁

You cant fire me dude, I already quit!!!!! Ya fuckin ambivalent retiree :) Classic Gen X move to just turn it over to DOGE

Not quite retired… just four drill periods left.

Not quite gen X either (right on the edge), but I’ll take it as a compliment.

You were wrong twice, so you’re still fired.
;)
