That was the whole plan back in March, remember? “Two weeks to flatten the curve!” We were going to not overwhelm the hospitals. That worked out well for us. Hospitals didn’t get overwhelmed, now we’re just all in this suspended state of animation hoping to not get locked down again while we wait for a vaccine. Just search for goalposts on here, as in “moving the goalposts”, and you’ll probably see all the discussion.

Rather than locking everyone down, I think it’s smarter to target high-risk populations and then have everyone else smartly go about their business.

Yeah, also remember back in March (April?) when the surgeon general and Dr. Fauci told us not to wear masks if we weren’t sick because healthy people wearing masks doesn’t do any good? Are they shills too?

Anyway, on March 25th that “jackass” actually predicted ~264,000 US deaths. So yeah, compared to Neil Ferguson’s model predicting 2.2 million deaths...I guess maybe he didn’t think it would be as terrible as that dude’s models predicted.

I wonder if that cartoon was done by someone who works in a grocery store or quickmart. I doubt it.

My wife went to Walmart the other day, after they had started up the mandatory mask rule. They have an older gentleman working at the door to remind people to put on a mask. Along comes Mr. Pennsylvania with wife and kid, sans masks. Door person says, “Sir, we require masks now.”

Guy turns and gives him the fuck you double finger and goes on in. My wife asks the checkout person why they didn’t do something, she shook her head and said management says they’re not allowed to do anything.

We are averaging 7-8 new tested cases in our county per day, so figuring there are probably 10 times that, that are not tested, half of them asymptomatic but contagious? Everyone goes to the local grocery store, Sheetz or Dunkin Donuts, etc.

Asymptomatic, contagious carriers are going into these stores in town daily. Not all are wearing masks. They’re putting the workers in there at risk. The workers know it too.
 
I still have not seen numbers for grocery store workers. Most didn't go to masks until recently. They were open thru the close down, masks. We know about health care infections and deaths. It would be helpful to take a population with pretty much the second worse case of exposure and see how they have managed. My guess is rates of infection are not much different than the public at large, or we would be hearing it.

  • In a lot of places, grocery store workers are getting hazardous duty pay to compensate for the increased risk

I don't understand why people keep using this argument. Dr. Fauci has clarified his position multiple times, even as recently as last week.

"I don't regret anything I said then because in the context of the time in which I said it, it was correct. We were told in our task force meetings that we have a serious problem with the lack of PPEs and masks for the health providers who are putting themselves in harm's way every day to take care of sick people," Fauci told O'Donnell.

"When it became clear that we could get the infection could be spread by asymptomatic carriers who don't know they're infected, that made it very clear that we had to strongly recommend masks," he said.

"And also, it soon became clear that we had enough protective equipment and that cloth masks and homemade masks were as good as masks that you would buy from surgical supply stores," Fauci added. "So in the context of when we were not strongly recommending it, it was the correct thing."

It's as if, when we're faced with a virus that literally no one has ever seen before, you have to stake out a position and never change it, even if you learn something new about it that contradicts what you thought. Because anyone who learns new things and then changes their mind is just a wishy-washy flip-flopper, you know. Totally not credible.

I was using that argument in concert with Dr. Fauci's point. In March, most of the educated guesses scientists were making were based on a few data sets, namely information disseminated by China and the Diamond Princess. As our knowledge of the virus changes, so must our response. I mean if we want to go back and look through past posts on here making predictions, I'm all for it. Lots of conjecture about how were only two weeks away from turning into another Italy, etc etc.

@snake020 was using an article from March 23rd in making his argument that Dr. Levitt is a "jackass". Ironic that on March 25th he published a paper that used information from the Diamond Princess to pretty accurately forecast US deaths. His guess also turned out to be MUCH more accurate than Dr. Neil Ferguson's model that was used to justify going into lockdown mode.

There's a difference in the messaging of "masks may work for the general public but we're asking you to refrain from using them to ensure that our front-line medical personnel can be protected" and "healthy people don't need to wear masks". The American public doesn't like being lied to.

Also, isn't it crazy that some people have some sort of T-cell immunity from this virus that literally no one has ever seen before? It's almost as if it shares similarities with other coronaviruses...like the original SARS? Funny that they named this one severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). As in, the second one after the original one. And yes, I realize that they're two different viruses. However, since they are genetically related, wouldn't it make sense that they share some similarities?

I like that he used the excuse that he had tested negative the day before, and that he was taking a drink of water. So does that mean that if I get tested I'm immune from the mask requirement? Passengers turned in Ted Cruz for not wearing his mask on a plane while drinking a cup of coffee (that he was actually holding in his hand), so using the same criteria Dr. Fauci is clearly guilty of the same "crime".

Not surprising that everyone leaps to his defense here. I don't really care but I find it interesting that no one expects him to lead by example.

They continue to talk about wearing a mask to protect others and they do tests to prove the point, what is heard very little is how the mask should be made to really provide a good level of protection (the surgeon generals video of him making a mask is rarely seen on TV now), the mask used in the test are ones constructed in a way that should provide decent protection, that is not the case when you look at how people are making mask at home.
