FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

MR1(SW)-->ENS

FY-10 STA-21 Core Selectee
So I just got back from sea a few days ago. Unfortunately we do not have internet access on a submarine so it was quite difficult communicating with the STA 21 people but I was able to get my physical sent to them (no thanks to my command but thanks to my girlfriend) and am qualified physically. Now I have to figure out where I want to go to college. When are the degree plans and acceptance letters due for the May 2010 NSI class. My gf told me not until like late FEB or MAR. I will call Ed Straten but assume he is on stand down right now. I have a few acceptance letters and degree plans but am just trying to weigh my options. If any one knows a good college that will work with us (ie rolling admissions) and what not please let me know. Thanks.

Hey stop up to the machine shop next to subway i'll get all of the info you need. i leave for the May class too. im the only MR1 at TRF just ask for Goose.

Anyone going to SUNY Maritime College? I was gonna get a Marine Engineering degree but they said I couldnt because of the required summer sea tours so i have to switch to mechanical enigneering, i'm also talking to The Citadel about a BS in either Chemistry or Math. Right now i have an AA in Applied Marine Engineering. Anyone have any input for either college

Required Summer Sea Tour!?

I do beleive that under the STA-21 program you are actually not allowed to go on the summer cruises, they require you to take summer classes to finish your degree within 3 years.

No, he means required summer sea tour for that particular degree...since it's a Maritime College--Not a NROTC summer cruise. And because we're aren't authorized that, he had to switch.

I'll be starting at SUNY in the Fall... Mechanical Engineering.

I am going to Embry-Riddle. Only got a year left and that is where I went to school before joining the Navy. Major- Aeronautics. Pilot Select. My physical status still says "pending NOMI review" and it was received at their office on 30 DEC 09. Hopefully I will be qualified soon. Any thoughts about a possible timeline for NOMI?

I was wondering how much it was going to cost you out of pocket to go to Embry Riddle? I am not sure if they give you a better rate for being active duty, I read on Petersons.com that tuition and fees were like $30 K per year. Are you using the GI Bill to supplement. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks - MM1(SS) Heuss

I dont know how davebomb plans on doing it but im going to use the GI bill to suppliment the tuition. The tuition is about 20K a year, If you enroll in the post 9/11 gi bill it will pay 100% of tuition that wont be covered by your STA21 money. Also if you choose to take a flight minor, the GI bill will pay all of your flight trainig costs. Ill be headin down there with my PPL and with my minor hopefully will be leaving with my commercial. I have a friend down there right now who is a STA21 OC and hes doing the same thing.

@SWOwhat:
Nope; but my placement tab section on the STA-21 site says "NSI and NROTC orders" requested 1/8/2010.

Also, anybody else review the new OPNAV 1420.1B? (http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=152114)

I wonder what the selectee "information package" looks like that is specified in 7.d of Chapter 8...

Yeah mine says the same thing: "NSI and NROTC orders" requested 12/30/2009
Hopefully they will be out soon. I'd like to move to Va Beach prior to NSI.

Secnavinst 1420.1b

The SECNAVINST 1420.1B is different from the OPNAVINST 1420.1A Commissioning Programs Instruction. The cancelled instruction is not the OPNAV but instead the SECNAV 1420.1A.

Belay my last. Reading OPNAVINST 1420.1B now. Got mixed up.

any alternates been picked up yet?

I haven't heard of any yet. I am a pilot alternate and had all my documents in as soon as I saw the results. My physical is still pending NOMI review (should have no problems since I used it for the Flying CWO program as well) and I am praying for that call, not only for my career progression but it would bring me back from Iraq in time for my sons birth.

Seems like a lot of money to spend on a Commercial license when all you have to do is take a test post flight school to achieve the same thing. I would save my GI Bill to pay for a Masters in the future if I were you. There is plenty of financial aid and scholarships aviailable to OC's that won't cost you anything in return.

I was selected for NFO so the post flight school test wont work. and i have to tap into my GI bill any ways to suppliment my tuition so i figured why not.
