FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

Does anyone know if we get a uniform allowance when we get to NSI or does that come out of our pay? I report in May and, if we don't get one, I am definitely going to need to start saving!

1 Month into the FEB 2009 Class I recieved an initial clothing allowance of 1400$. However, this did not cover all of the required expenses that go along with clothing issue.

I was in the May 2009 NSI class and they issued us the uniform allowance, we got all our uniforms, and paid it off the last week we were there. We were the first class that didn't have to purchase the long sleeve wash khakis which saved some money. I was a couple hundred dollars under what they gave us in the allowance so I actually made a few bucks. Plus, they give you the option to buy the nicer and higher class (but more expensive) winter dress jacket and shirt. As ofter as we will probably be wearing them most of us went with the regular brand to save money. I think 2 people out of my NSI class did the nicer jacket. Also, you are going to have to wear the leather dress shoes, no corframs. Just a heads up!

What uniforms do we need to check in? Their website doesn't mention having to bring regular enlisted uniforms. I wear woodland BDUs at my command, so I figured I'd have to buy that new peanut butter service uniform or the blue aqua-flauge cammies.

Did you check in with your dress blues?

I attended BOOST last year but the first NSI class did check in wearing casual dress civilian clothes. We wore our enlisted uniforms during BOOST so we all had ours there but you don't need them for NSI so I wouldn't bring them. Don't trash them though, there is always the chance of getting kicked out of the program, failing out, quitting, etc which means you will need your old enlisted uniforms. I have mine in a plastic tub out in my garage collecting dust. Hope to God I never have to wear them again, ha!

After BOOST, it was a quick walk across the street on a Friday so we had the weekend to prepare for the early Monday morning. I don't know if they will issue the BDUs, they didn't last year. If so, you will be the first STA-21 group to receive them. I didn't have the peanut butters but some of the guys did in my class. This was nice for them because they didn't have to buy as many new khaki shirts which saves money. So bring your leather shoes, khaki shirts, pt gear, black socks, white undershirts, SHOWER SHOES, and something to keep you entertained the first few weekends of "training country liberty". And don't get caught with food in your rooms or with your locker unlocked. The sandpit (volleyball court) behind the barracks gets lots of use when you don't follow their rules. Go figure!

The new instruction in now available so all this prior year stuff will probably remain the same but definitely check for yourself to ensure you don't start off on a bad note. If not, your chiefs will enjoy having somebody to rag on the 8 weeks you will be there.

Are you referring to the OPNAV 1420.1B instruction?

Thanks for the clarification. I browsed through it and dont believe it says much about what to bring to NSI. I have been using the NSI website for check-in requirements. Hope that suffices!
 
Does anyone know if selected for the CORE option, what determines which community option you can go into? Is it needs of the navy or is it your choice??
 
I have an interesting yet perplexing decision to make that I was hoping I could get some experienced input on. Before I start I would like to disclaimer that I am excited about either option but am worried about making the correct choice.

I was selected for the STA-21 Nurse Corp option AND just found out today that I was selected for the MECP (medical enlisted commissioning program). Both have the end result of a Nursing degree and commission. If anyone has any suggestions or good gouge on how one program outweighs another I would greatly appreciate any and all.

Does the MECP program have alternate selections. Id be willing to put money on that someone is ready and willing to fill your STA-21 slot. I cant really comment on either program but i would say your in there like swim wear in either program so why not share the love.
 
You're required to front all tuition and expenses with MECP which would be a con to me. But then you won't be affiliated with NROTC which is a pro. Like you said both will end with bars on your collar.

Needs of the Navy. When my husband reported to the NROTC here at NCSU, they asked him which designator would be his first pick. We just got word yesterday that they are willing to help him get back into subs, but he had to show his grades for both physics classes and his Calculus classes. Looking at an interview with the admiral in DC this spring! :)
