If you don't get selected this board. Will you reapply next time? Have you considered any other designators besides SWO.
I am not quite sure yet. If I don't get chosen this time around, I certainly need to get a full time job position ASAP. My financial situation at the moment is becoming quite dreary quite quick. I can't keep waiting around in this kind of position. My main worry is that once I get a good job, would it be fair for me to reapply to the navy? Or would it be completely unfair for me to get a job like that knowing full well I could be leaving in only a few months? I am pretty certain that if I told a possible employer that I am trying to get into the navy and that I could leave soon, I would never get hired.

As for going for anything beyond SWO, I have never considered it. I have already taken the OAR twice, and I would need to take the entire ASTB in order to qualify for the other positions. That means I would only have one more time to take the test! That sounds pretty risky to me.

That's odd: my OR didn't tell me that. I submitted 4 LORs, only 1 of which was from an employer from the last three years (and I had more that one employer during that time).

I had an application sent back because we failed to supply a LOR or explanation for each employer.

I thought you could take the OAR as many times as you wanted but the ASTB only 3 times.

LORs make a difference and It helps with the whole package. Take it from someone that got picked up with a 2.8 GPA

It really depends on what designator, the recent selects for SNA and SNFO were essentially "did they apply" then lets select them, there wasn't much of review of applications it was more "auto select"

I have had ones with low GPA's near yours picked up, one was picked up at a board with 25% selection rate, his LOR's were mediocre at best, and if he was applying for SWO I would not have submitted them, but he went for SNA and had a 9 on the PFAR so off the application went and now he is commissioned.

Generally if a person doesn't get picked for SWO the odds of them getting picked for another designator is low (this does sound bad, but SWO is very general and is the "catch all" for those that don't have degrees that correlate to other designators), the exception is a person that then decides to go aviation.

I believe my recruiter told me just that. He said that if I was going for aviation, he would have placed my odds of getting picked up a little higher than for more getting picked up as a SWO. I got my degree in music, however, so a lot of the other fields are just not available to me.

NavyOffRec - Have you seen selection boards for Pilot/NFO/SWO that take longer than two weeks for the board to release the results? If so, what typically causes that length of a delay in the release? We've been hearing dates being thrown around on here as late as August 13th and that seems unusually long.

Action is the foundational key to all success.

I haven't had an employer in the past three years, so the past employer I got was one from about five years ago and then I just went after people that knew me well that were in the military. I guess my OR didn't go into detail about the past three years of employers because I did not have any :(

My (original) recruiter was a mixed bag. He was a diligent worker and we got my app done in only a week (no doubt facilitated by the fact I was already in DEP) but he was retiring in less than a month and had a habit of telling half-truths. Kept trying to sign me up for the IDC board after I told him I wasn't interested in aviation and he was insistent that I would be fine without calculus and physics. Sure buddy.... I am glad I went with my gut on that one.

Edit: For clarification, I just signed up for SWO. It's interesting when people who know what a SWO is discover this fact and ask themselves "People actually want to be SWOs?" Yup....

I have, for a variety of reasons, all valid, 2 weeks is average.

I am still pondering between SWO and NFO. I like the idea of flying, but I also want to gain my own command one day, as well as attend the Naval War College later in my career. Dont let people put you down if you want SWO.

Here's my opinion (forgive grammar and spelling, on my phone), for what it's worth. I requested orders for a special program, knowing that I would apply for OCS before I even completed my training. I planned my enlisted career as if I won't get OCS, because there is no guarantee. OCS is my ultimate goal and I could have saved the spot in the program for somebody else... but I didn't. If you need to get a job, do it. Don't let that job prevent you from going after your real goals though. I understand and appreciate your moral position, but don't piss up a great opportunity for a long term career because of a job you get out of necessity.
