Good points. I wasn't knocking the athletes of today, as it takes much more dedication to excel today than it did in the 70s, but just wondering if the sport of swimming will ever hit a plateau, with records only broken every few years, not every few months. Do you think Phelps's records (both the world records he sets in different events and the medal record) will stand for several years, or will someone better be making a run at his records at the London games?
His records will stand until he beats them again until he retires (probably after the London Games). He'll be 26 by then. Ian Thorpe was in the same boat 8 years ago, with people talking about him being the greatest. And he was, until Phelps came along.
They will be always broken by a younger and faster athlete. Eventually we will plateau in the sport, as long as PED's are banned. Technology can take you so far, but there's obviously a point where a 50 can't physically get any faster. Whether that point is far off is another thing. We've seen it in running. Freaks like MP will come along and drop records a few tenths of a second at a time, but eventually we'll get to where the records will stand for longer and longer periods of time.
