Old R.O. Picture of the Day for 26 Aug 2008
VF-301 transitioned from the F-4S to the F-14A in October 1984. The last Phantoms were flown out in late September, and the first Tomcats showed up in late October. For training in the Tomcat, the squadron was divided in two, with the first group going through a two-week training session with VF-124 in mid-August, and the second group going through the RAG in September. About half of the squadron had previous fleet F-14 experience... which meant that half of us did not. We learned how to start and fly the beast and got NATOPS qualled (supposed to get 10 hours.. I got about 6.5 in three hops and they waved their hands and told me I was qualled). We spent the next year's drill weekends learning the weapons systems.
The above photo was taken during the December 1984 drill weekend. It was the first time we had three aircraft airborne at the same time. The airfield in the photo is at the north end of San Clemente Island, about 60 miles west of San Diego.
