once you get your FINSEL you should have orders too...at least that's the way it worked for me. talk to your manager then (very awkward I know) and tell them that you got selected and going to OCS, and that you'll be gone for a while (don't tell them how long tho...say "about a year" if they insist)...bla bla....they legally have to hold your position for at least 5 years (safety net in case you attrite too)...they should have their own protocol to follow if they are a big company...which if you're like me and worked for a big defense contractor...they should have
I do not intend on telling my employer any of my navy intentions until like a month out.

I don’t think this would apply to me, in my offer letter I signed it was stated I couldn’t have another job.
is military leave....I would just bring it up anyways before quitting. idk what you do, but if it is a defense contractor think how bad it wuld be if they fire your ass to go serve the nation, when most of their budget comes from the DoD.....I would just ask anyways

Depends on how you define "competition". They are just mechanics. For a prestigious squadron.

Fair point--I just assumed their credentials would be solid since they were accepted to the squadron but guess that may not correlate to the ASTB, GPA, etc.

So it would classify under military leave. Under USERRA, you can stay on military leave in an active duty status for up to five years with your employer.

I’ve had to enact this before with a previous employer.

Here's more information: ?

I guess my question is how are they enforced to pay you for a whole year

Definitely not. They could be solid dudes don't get me wrong. They probably look stellar on paper. However, they still do the same job as other squadrons (working on engines, the airframe, and electronic systems.

I think a part of it says that it's 5 years, unless your initial commitment is longer than that....which for us future pilots and nfos would be actually longer...so it could potentially protect our military leave status for a hot min

they aren't enforced to pay you, just to keep your position. However some defense contractors will keep your pay and benefits going even after you start your military time....it depends on the company, but it seems like defense contractors include it as a part of your benefits package

They are not enforced to pay. It's completely dependent on the company.
